Leadership for the Rest of Us
August 4, 2011 -- (by Alex Work) Leadership and the benefits it provide should not be exclusive to multi-national CEO’s, top flight executives or professional athletes. The perks and benefits that leadership can provide every single one of us, but most will never even consider it as a personal development tool.
The fact is, leadership is for everyone, whether you are a student, stay-at-home mom, struggling entrepreneur, or even someone looking to get more from their relationship.
When you learn the basics of leadership, you—
Develop Unstoppable Enthusiasm. You suddenly find that roadblocks, failure, and setbacks are not game-stoppers, but simply opportunities for you to shine. This type of enthusiasm means that you are optimistic, and willing to embark on new opportunities and challenges.
Become the Master of Your Reputation. You understand that your reputation is your brand, and you work to make sure it is exactly the one you want to present to the world. You know that your reputation can open the doors of opportunity, and can similarly shut them when it is left unattended.
Live Your Life at an Elite Level. “Good enough” is simply not good enough. By mastering leadership skills, your life—in all areas, whether it’s work, social, health—goes to a whole other level. You find that you instantly decide that you want the best from your life, and you all of a sudden have the skills to get it.
Seize Opportunities You Never Thought Imaginable. Soon as you begin developing your sense of leadership, you quickly begin discovering opportunities that you never thought possible. Learning these priceless skills ensures that when opportunity comes your way, you seize it forcefully.
Master Fear. How much of your life is dictated by the things that you fear? We avoid certain places, things, and people because of the perceived risk of engaging with them. How much are you leaving behind by not acting on the things that scare you?
We avoid our goals and dreams because we fear failure, we fear succeeding, we fear, fear, fear. What can we do about this?
Acknowledge Your Fear. As ridiculous as this sounds, there comes a time when you cannot … By doing this you are accepting that you are fearful, and by looking at your fear logically instead of emotionally, you can start looking at the root of why you feel the way you do. Those who seem to act with complete disregard of their fears and of the ceilings imposed by others are able to acknowledge their fears as what they are—apparitions.
Understand that Your Fear is of a Future Reality that hasn’t happened yet. In other words, you are feeling anxiety and fearful because you believe that something down the road is going to hurt you, whether it is emotionally, physically, or financially. In these moments, after you have acknowlged your fear, understood why you are feeling it. Once you understand why you are feeling it, you are generally able to discard the reasons for feeling it.
Lastly, it’s vital that you take action. Once you do this, you put the ball in your court, so to speak. You might fail, you might succeed, but at the end of the day you are pursuing what you care most about.
