Effective Leadership: What is it and How to Can You Develop It?
August 19, 2011 -- (by Alex Work) Effective leadership doesn't have to be a mystery. And more importantly, it does not have to be reserved for a select few.
It's not just for CEO's, superstar athletes or politicians. If you have read up on YourLeadershipBook, you will know that leadership skills and effective leadership are for everyone. Period.
What are the Principles of Effective Leadership?
Effective leadership is about building trust. It’s about you building trust in yourself so that you can go on to achieve great things. It’s about having others build trust in you because they know that you will blaze the path.
But there is more than that. Here they are, in no particular order, the five main principles of effective leadership --
1. Be Excellent. At the end of the day, leaders make a commitment to excellence. They want to succeed, and they want those around them to succeed as well. Not only is this an incredibly charming and attractive quality, but it reaps the benefits that being excellent brings with it. Do everything as well as you can. Simple as that. If you are giving something (whether a relationship, career, fitness regimen or anything else for that matter) half an effort, it is time to either commit yourself to excellence or re-evaluate why you are in that situation.
2. Possess Rock-Solid Determination. Effective leadership is not flash-in-the-pan good. It’s something that you do every day. Not only that, but more often than not being a leader means that you are at the tip of the spear when disaster strikes. Effective leadership means you are able to confront the good-and-bad in life in shoulder on, undaunted.
3. Set the Example. You never ask anything from anyone that you wouldn’t ask from yourself first. Effective leaders don’t complain or whine. They set the tone for everyone around them, and this includes in relationships, friendships, as well as the company office or the locker room.
4. Have Clear Results in Mind, and a Plan to Get There. Effective leadership means that you have a clear idea of where you want your life to take you. The reason it is so clear is because you have a strategy or plan to get you there. For some, this plan is more detailed, while others can have the general steps in the plan and that is all they require. Regardless of their particular situation, they know exactly where they are going and what it's going to take to get there. Effective leadership entails not being afraid to plan.
5. High Standards for Yourself. It might sound a little corny, but leaders depend on their reputation. Instead of seeing it as mere vanity, leaders realize that their reputation has the opportunity to open and close doors for themselves, and as such conduct themselves and mould their reputations in such a manner that they attract success.
I discuss these principles of effective leadership – as well as several more – in depth in YourLeadershipBook. More information on this book on effective leadership is below, but first --
How Can I Develop Effective Leadership?
This can be a particularly daunting task for those who have no idea where to start. Effective leadership is like anything else, it is something you work on and work towards. So how do you do that?
1. Assess Yourself Honestly. You need to give yourself as an objective a picture as possible of where you stand right now with your leadership abilities.
2. Evaluate Your Progress. Whether it is daily, weekly, or even monthly, evaluate the progress you are making. Weed out the things that aren't working, and boost the things that are.
3. Write Out a Plan for to Achieve Effective Leadership. Writing out your leadership goals are an easy way to make them more realistic. Create a set of standards that you will adhere to. Haivng this plan will give you an easypoint of reference on your journey to achieving effective leadership.
4. Surround Yourself with Like-Minded People. If we are a product of our environment, what are you right now? If you were a reflection of the people you surround yourself with, would you say that is an accurate reflection of the person you want to be?
